Evento: Choquequirao Ultra Trail
★★★★★
I have made numerous trips to the Andes, including hiking twice to Machu Picchu, once in 1987 and again in 2012. Both of... those were amazing, extremely memorable journeys, but this latest trip in many ways surpassed even those as remarkable as they were. The trip to Choquequirao organized by Roger and an excellent team was great for so many reasons, a big one being the way that the local communities are integrated in the logistics. It is important to Roger and his team that local people not only benefit from the logistics, but he also fosters the participation of the local community in the race and hike itself. The journey starts with a race of school children Roger organizes with local leaders in the community of Cachora, which was a treat to witness and a great way to begin our adventure. I am 60 years old and fairly active, but had not hiked in some time. This trip was a great reminder of why I love to hike, the natural beauty, the opportunity to access far off places such as the marvel of the ruins, but it was so more than that. Roger and his team and the group of fellow hikers and runners was fantastic. At the start and the end of each day we gathered for delicious meals, conversation and camaraderie. The hike itself was a challenge to me physically but I had lots of support and encouragement. I was allowed to go at my pace and I feel so accomplished now and motivated to go again next year. This was a great companion to the Inca trail hikes of my youth, but not a bookend because I hope to go on many future hikes with Roger and his team. They have my full confidence and I am so grateful for the experience they provided. It was incredible.
